Dudley and Ward succeeded to the title at his birth. He appears to have lived principally at his maternal estate of Ashtead in Surrey. He died, following a fall from his horse, while still unmarried, leaving the title to devolve on his cousin John Ward, then member of Parliament for Newcastle-under-Lyme.2 Further details of his career will be presented in the second part of this work.
